Diego Salcedo

One day while presenting the history lecture in Granganameo's great feating house at Roanoak Indian Village, L. Douglas Waldorf was quoting Thomas Harriot and the religion of the Roanoak's and their legend of killing a man and watching to see if he would come back to life after 3 days, a young Puerto Rican woman who was visiting Roanoak Indian Village, looked puzzled and said "I didn't know that was this far north".  Doug Waldorf was intriqued and asked her what she meant.  She stated that as a young girl, like all school children in Puerto Rico, she was taught about the Spanish explorer, Diego Salcedo.  Diego Salcedo was taken by the native people, and in order to determine whether these white, bearded men were mortal or immortal, the natives drown Diego Salcedo, then laid his body on the ground and selected a committee to keep watch over his body for three days to see if Diego Salcedo would come back to life and live again.  Since Diego Salcedo did not come back to life in three days, the natives then knew that the Spanish explorers were only mortal men, and not the Gods they had thought them to be. The native people had a legend of a Great White God who had visited them, taught them His religion of peace, healed their sick, and promised to return again.  As with the other native people encountered by the explorers, whether from Spain, France or England, the native people of the American Continents had the same reaction and thought the explorers were Gods returning and treated them with reverence and love, until the native people found the explorers to be only mortal men, and men who could not be trusted.
