L. Douglas Waldorf was trained as a Fireman Boiler Tender.  Doug was left standing alone after all the other men were issued their duty stations after bootcamp.  L. Douglas Waldorf was wondering where he was to go, or if he'd been forgotten, and those issuing the assignments were looking back over the assignment papers, when someone shouted "Hey are you the guy who plays the drums?"  The regular drummer in the Coast Guard Band had become ill and someone who knew L. Douglas Waldorf and knew that he played the drums, had told the Band Director, and special emergency orders were cut for L. Douglas Waldorf to be assigned to the Coast Guard Band as Drummer.
So, L. Douglas Waldorf spent the remainder of World War II playing drums in the Coast Guard Band in Curtis Bay, Maryland just outside Baltimore, Maryland.
